The NC State softball team picked up two wins this weekend to continue its fall slate of games. The Pack faced Elon on Saturday, marking its first road game of the fall season and defeated the Phoenix 9-2.
It was a day full of offense for the Pack, who began the scoring right from the start with junior Sam Russ leading off the first inning with a single and eventually came around to score the game’s first run.
Russ and senior Angie Rizzi led the team with two hits apiece for a team total of nine to go along with eight walks.
Senior Devin Wallace, sophomore Sydney Nester and freshman Sam Gress combined to hold Elon to only two hits in the game, while striking out 15.
In Sunday’s game against UNC-Chapel Hill, Rizzi was again a leader for the offense with a two-run home run that propelled the Wolfpack to a 5-4 win over the Tar Heels.
The Pack continued the offensive surge in the third inning, scoring all five runs in that frame. A sac fly and an RBI double from senior Brigette Nordberg scored the first three runs.
Nester saw the most action in the circle Sunday for the Pack with eight strikeouts. The Tar Heels struggled offensively before the top of the seventh inning where they strung a couple of positive at-bats together and eventually score those baserunners to make it 5-4, which would not be sufficient for the victory as the Pack was able to come out on top.
The team will continue its fall schedule with a game against NC Central on Saturday, Oct.12 at 12 p.m. at Dail Softball Stadium.
