The NC State club tennis team had a productive weekend, with the team taking home the United States Tennis Association North Carolina State Championship on Sunday.
Although the weather was unfavorable, the teams played through the rainy conditions with matches shortened to four games. The tournament was hosted in Wilmington, North Carolina, with 28 total teams making the trip for the state tournament. Some notable teams that attended were Duke, Appalachian State and UNC-Chapel Hill.
While 28 teams came to the tournament, some colleges brought multiple teams to compete. NC State joined ECU, UNCW, Elon and others in putting multiple teams in the tournament.
While it is usually expected that the A team will experience much more success than the B team, for NC State, both teams performed extremely well.
For the A team, the Pack defeated Campbell, UNCW and Duke on its way to the finals. On the opposite side of the bracket, UNC-Chapel Hill rolled through its matches to meet the Wolfpack in the finals.
While down early after the first few matches, the Pack battled back in the mixed doubles matches. The A team won all four games in the mixed doubles portion of the match, winning the match overall by three games.
Over the course of the tournament, the A team for the Pack won four consecutive games and lost none, making for a very impressive performance.
The B team also performed well, making it to the semifinals of the tournament. The team beat the Duke C team and Davidson before losing to the UNC-Chapel Hill A team. In the third-place game, the Pack lost to the Duke A team, finishing the tournament with a record of 2-2.
With a combined record of 6-2, both the A team and B team performed extremely well in the tournament, proving they have the best program in the state. This was the first tournament win for club tennis on the year, and a win that should give the team a boost of momentum heading into the rest of the year.
