Former First Team All-ACC pass rusher Bradley Chubb suffered a serious injury Sunday afternoon, while NC State’s former quarterbacks went 2-1 and put up impressive stat lines. A pair of former fan-favorite running backs excelled catching passes out of the backfield. Here are some former Wolfpack standouts’ showings in week four of the NFL season.
Russell Wilson, Quarterback, Seattle Seahawks
In a game that was seemingly over by halftime, Wilson was efficient all afternoon, completing 22 of his 28 passes for 240 yards and a touchdown. Wilson was sacked four times, a problem he has had to endure so far this season due to a poor offensive line, but that didn’t slow him down. The Seahawks flew past the Arizona Cardinals to the tune of a 27-10 win, and the former NC State quarterback has his team at 3-1 and in second place in the NFC West.
Philip Rivers, Quarterback, Los Angeles Chargers
Like Wilson, Rivers had an easy day at the office Sunday afternoon, completing 24 of 30 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns. Rivers spread the wealth all game long, completing passes to nine different receivers. The Chargers beat the historically bad Miami Dolphins to improve to 2-2, and Rivers’ passer rating is up to 105.8, the highest of his career.
Jacoby Brissett, Quarterback, Indianapolis Colts
With star wide receiver T.Y. Hilton out due to a thigh injury, Brissett struggled against a solid Oakland Raiders defense. The former two-year Pack starter hit on just 24 of 46 passes, throwing for 265 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in a 31-24 home loss.
Nyheim Hines, Running Back, Indianapolis Colts
Hines hauled in six of Brissett’s 24 completions, gaining 39 yards and serving as Brissett’s safety blanket. Hines’ six receptions was a season high, and the elusive third-down back is now on pace for 56 receptions and 296 yards this season.
Jaylen Samuels, Running Back, Pittsburgh Steelers
After barely playing in the Steelers’ first three games, seeing the field on just 33% of the team offensive snaps, Samuels was finally unleashed in the Steelers’ 27-3 Monday Night Football win over the Cincinnati Bengals. Samuels carried the ball 10 times for 26 yards and a touchdown but did most of his work through the air, catching eight passes for 57 yards. The Steelers also used Samuels as a quarterback in the “wildcat” formation, and Samuels completed 3 of 3 passes for 31 yards.
Bradley Chubb, EDGE, Denver Broncos
The former NC State standout lineman had a sack and six tackles in a 26-24 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars Sunday afternoon, but it came at a cost. Chubb partially tore his ACL during the game and is likely out for the remainder of the season, a devastating blow for a Broncos defense that didn’t have a single sack through the first three games.
A.J. Cole, Punter, Oakland Raiders
Despite the Raiders putting up 31 points against the Colts, the former NC State standout got plenty of opportunities to show off his strong leg. Cole punted five times for 253 yards, including a long punt of 59 yards. Cole also worked the field-position game to perfection, pinning the Colts deep inside their own 20-yard line three times.
Junior defensive end Bradley Chubb and Assistant Head Coach for Defense George Barlow celebrate after forcing a turnover on downs. Chubb was felt all over the field with a tackle for a loss, a breakup, and a forced fumble during the 21-14 homecoming loss to Boston College on Oct. 29, 2016 in Carter Finley Stadium.
