The NC State women’s soccer team drew 1-1 with No. 20 Virginia Tech on Sunday evening. The two teams began the overtime period but only played three minutes of it before the game was suspended due to lightning in the area. Following a delay, the game was not able to be resumed and it ended as a draw.

The draw was another solid defensive performance for the Wolfpack (6-4-4, 1-1-4 ACC) as the team has conceded just four goals so far in ACC play despite its difficult start. The Hokies (9-3-2, 1-3-2 ACC) are the lowest ranked of the four top-25 ranked teams the Pack has faced so far in ACC play.

While the defense shone, the offense continued its underwhelming stretch. For the fifth time in ACC play, the Pack failed to score more than one goal. The lone occasion where the Pack managed to score twice in an ACC match was its 2-0 win over Boston College who has a 1-4-1 record in the ACC.

The offense looked decent against the Hokies with a number of players, senior midfielder Ricci Walkling, and freshmen forwards Leyah Hall-Robinson and Jameese Joseph, all having decent games going forward, but the Pack has struggled to convert its chances into goals.

The one goal the Wolfpack did score on the night was a good one, however, as redshirt senior Maxine Blackwood grabbed her first goal of the season. The forward peeled off her defender at the top of the box and was found by Jospeh before burying the one-timer into the top left corner.

Blackwood missed the end of last season and the beginning of the season due to injury but since making her return on Sept. 22 against Duke the experienced forward has been making an increasing impact on each match that she plays in.

The equalizer came for Virginia Tech in the 78th minute as Molly Feighan’s shot was deflected by a defender at the top of the box and slowly rolled past junior keeper Jessica Berlin who was unable to reach the deflected effort.

The Wolfpack will be back in action on Oct. 19 as it travels to Pittsburgh in search of just its second ACC win.
