The Lonnie Poole Golf Course was designed by Arnold Palmer Design Company, and serves as the venue for the men’s and women’s varsity golf teams.
The NC State women’s golf team finished 14th out of 17 teams at the Cougar Classic hosted by the College of Charleston in Hanahan, SC despite a career-best 69 from senior Mim Sangkapong in the final round.
Sangkapong finished atop the NC State leaderboard with a one-over-par 217, tied for 29th overall for the three-day tournament. It was also the best 54-hole score in her career. Unfortunately, the other Pack competitors weren’t able to feed off her success to boost NC State up the team leaderboard.
Freshmen Lea Klimentova and Inja Fric tied for 60th out of 93 golfers with a three-round 223, good for seven-over par. Sophomore Monika Hartl and freshman Pilar Berchot rounded out the five golfers for the Wolfpack at 10-over par and 11-over par, respectively.
With such a young team, NC State has the potential to get increasingly better as the season continues. With three freshmen and a sophomore in the starting five, Pack fans should be excited about the future of women’s golf.
Vanderbilt won the tournament with a team score of 27-under par, one shot ahead of Wake Forest and three ahead of Florida. The next highest score was Arkansas at 18 shots behind Vandy, so it was really a three-team race for the finish.
There were five ACC schools in attendance in South Carolina. Apart from Wake Forest, Florida State and North Carolina finished ahead of the Wolfpack at tied for seventh and ninth, respectively.
Of the ACC schools, NC State only beat out Boston College, which finished 16th at 50-over par.
Women’s golf will be back in action on September 23-25 at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Wolcott, Colorado. The team won’t have a home tournament at Lonnie Poole Golf Course until the NCAA Regional Championship in May, 2020.
