The 2019 Major League Baseball regular season is officially over with the conclusion of game 162 last night. Let’s take a look and see how some NC State baseball players will be representing the Wolfpack in this year’s postseason.

Trea Turner, Shortstop, Washington Nationals

Turner had a very successful 2019 season with 155 hits, 57 RBIs and 19 home runs. Historically, he hasn’t always had the best postseason. In 2017 he had only 3 hits in 21 at-bats and was unable to produce any RBIs or home runs. 2016 wasn’t much better with 7 hits in 22 at-bats and only one RBI.

That being said, he was responsible for the go-ahead grand slam against the Philadelphia Phillies last Tuesday night which clinched the National’s postseason berth and allowed for a 6-5 win. Turner and the Nationals will be looking to continue their 8 game winning streak as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Wild Card game.

Andrew Knizner, Catcher/First Baseman, St. Louis Cardinals

Knizner did not start the season on a major league roster. In fact, he spent the majority of the season bouncing back and forth between the Cardinals and their Triple-A affiliate, the Memphis Redbirds. He was recalled September 1st and will remain on the roster throughout the 2019 postseason. 

Since his debut in June, he has had 53 at-bats with 12 hits, 7 RBIs and 2 home runs. With no previous experience in the postseason and not much time spent in the Major Leagues so far it will be interesting to see how he performs. After winning the NL Central division, the Cardinals will battle the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS which starts on October 3rd.

The Major League Baseball postseason begins Tuesday, October 1st with the NL Wild Card game.
