NC State gymnastics will host its home opener of the season against Ohio State this Saturday at Reynolds Coliseum starting at 6 p.m.
The Wolfpack (1-0) will take on the Buckeyes (0-1) from the Big Ten conference who recently lost to No. 5 Georgia. Despite a different start to the season, the Buckeyes are in a better position to upturn the Pack, as the Buckeyes scored 194.900 as a team, a 1.150 difference in the Pack’s score that led it to victory this past Saturday against Michigan State.
In comparison to the Pack this season, the Buckeyes’ season opening scores were all slightly higher in each category than the Pack’s, but nothing so drastic as to be insurmountable. The largest difference in the event scores was 0.45 on the vaults.
The Wolfpack’s two all-arounders, senior Caitlyn Fillard and junior Drew Grantham, scored very well during their first meet. Fillard finished with an overall score of 38.975, a margin of 0.025 less than the Buckeyes senior all-arounder Jamie Stone, who scored an even 39.000. Fillard did 0.55 better than the second all-around for the Buckeyes, junior Olivia Aepli, who finished with 38.425, which was only 0.75 points better than Grantham at 37.675.
Last season, the Wolfpack defeated the Buckeyes along with Central Michigan during the tri-meet in March. The Pack won 196.800-196.525 against the Buckeyes, which was the first time the two competed against each other since 2008. The Pack defeated the Buckeyes in 2008 as well, 193.625-193.400.
Last season, of the four only Fillard was an all-arounder during the tri-meet and finished in third place. Even though Fillard was the only all-arounder, her personal scores fell short to Stone on the vault, beam and floor.
Even though the Pack had a smaller score to begin the season, it has a good track record when competing with the Buckeyes.
