NC State’s No. 20 gymnastics team had a strong season opener with a win against Michigan State on Saturday, beating the Spartans 193.750-191.700.
The Wolfpack (1-0) defeated the Spartans (0-1) by 2.05 for its overall score, coming through on the bars where the team had three members on the podium, giving the Pack a 1.95 margin of victory in the event. The Pack also had a slight .45-point win on the beam. The Pack tied with the Spartans on the floor 48.725-48.725. The Spartans, however, took the vault by .35 points.
On the bars, freshman Meredith Robinson placed first in her debut with the Pack with a score of 9.775. Following Robinson’s performance, both junior Drew Grantham and senior Caitlyn Fillard tied for second with a score of 9.750.
Robinson was one of three freshmen for the Pack, the other two debuts being Alliah Harrison and Nicole Webb. Robinson was the only freshman to place on the podium in an event.
On the beam, Fillard was the only member of the Pack to place on the podium, scoring first place with a high score of 9.800. Fillard opened the season with three podium placements.
Senior Paris Phillips was the only member of the Pack to place in the top three on the floor. With a score of 9.825, Phillips tied for second. Other high scorers on the floor were senior Alexa Phillips with a score of 9.775, and Fillard and Grantham who both scored 9.700.
On the vault, the only event the Pack fell short on, Paris Phillips once again tied for second place, scoring 9.750. Fillard and Alexa Phillips tied for fourth place, with a score of 9.725.
All-around, Fillard took first place with a score of 38.975 followed by teammate Grantham who accumulated a score of 37.675, placing third.
The Wolfpack will have its home opener against Ohio State this coming Saturday in Reynolds Coliseum at 6 p.m.
