Fall competition ends for the NC State rifle team with the winter airgun championships, hosted in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Four athletes participated for the Pack and competed in the open competition and junior competition.
The event started on Dec. 6 and went until Dec. 8. and program alum Lucas Kozeniesky also competed.
Sophomore Emily Fisher did the best in the women’s open competition, placing 30th out of 215 contestants. She scored a 615.6 on the first day and a 618.9 on the second day. Her match score of 1234.5 landed her at 20th in the women’s junior category.
Freshman Makenzie Sheffield shot a 1229.5 in her first Winter Airgun Championships. This score was good for 42nd in the women’s open category and 27th in the women’s junior category. Freshman Addy Burrow shot a 1226.6, finishing in 51st place in the women’s open category and 35th in the women’s junior.
Freshman John Peterson placed 43rd in the men’s open category with a final score of 1213.7. This score got him 23rd for the men’s junior category.
Lucas Kozeniesky, a former member of NC State rifle and a current member of Team USA, completed the event in 1st place. His final score was 1259.2. The championships serve as the first part of the 2020 Olympic Trials for the national rifle team. Kozeniesky will continue to compete in the spring for his shot at the Olympics.
