On Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. in Stewart Theatre, the a cappella group Acappology celebrated its founding with a 25th anniversary concert, Quarter Life Crisis. The concert featured songs from the past and ended with a piece performed by many Acappology alumni from the audience. The concert started with a short slideshow and video, after which the group came down the center aisle in retro ‘80s and ‘90s outfits. A raffle was included during intermission as well.
This concert was in planning for about twelve months, according to Acappology President Max Ganch, a fourth-year studying graphic design.
“We have to do things really far in advance and then work on them all semester,” Ganch said. “It’s a lot of the logistics to figure out. Even a lot of the group members don’t know what goes into actually planning it.”
Alex Madej, a first-year studying biochemistry, said the group put in extra practice hours leading up to the concert.
“We had 12 hours total of rehearsal this week,” Madej said.
The concert featured the songs “Done for Me” by Charlie Puth, “Waterfalls” by TLC, “Awoo” by Sofi Tukker, “Japanese Denim” by Daniel Caesar, “breathin” by Ariana Grande, “when the party’s over” by Billie Eilish and more.
At intermission, the group changed out of its retro outfits and into black and gold colored clothes. Acappology raffled off two CD sets and the chance for the audience member who won to choose one of the group members to sing the song they auditioned with.
The concert ended with the alumni song, where the Acappology members were joined by some of the group’s alumni. The two students that were chosen to perform solos were Megan McNairy, who performed “Bottom of the River” by Delta Rae, and Adrian Maraan, who performed “Diamonds” by Rihanna.
The concert was a big hit with the audience, which filled about one-third of the theater and interacted a lot with the group. The audience included family members, friends, alumni, faculty and students. Skylar Penney, a second-year studying environmental science, was a student who came looking for something to fill her afternoon.
“I was looking for something fun to do tonight, and the concert seemed like a good way to destress before finals,” Penney said. Other audience members came out to support friends or family who were members of the group.
