The NC State women’s tennis team won its first ACC game of the season against Notre Dame 4-3 in South Bend, Indiana Friday night.
The No. 4 Wolfpack (14-2, 1-0 ACC) held a close match against the No. 32 Fighting Irish (7-4, 0-1 ACC) but the Pack’s success in its single matches sealed the team’s victory. Not only did the Pack win its first conference game of the season, but the match also marked head coach Simon Earnshaw’s 100th career win at NC State.
The doubles matches went in the Irish’s favor, securing two of the three games. Wolfpack senior Anna Rogers and sophomore Alana Smith fell to junior Cameron Corse and freshman Page Freeman in a close 7-5 match. Freshman Lana Mavor and junior Lexi Keberle were also handed a loss from the Irish duo of redshirt sophomore Julia Lilien and senior Zoe Spence, 6-3.
The Wolfpack did manage to secure a win in the doubles match. Senior Adriana Reami and junior Jaeda Daniel easily secured a 6-2 victory over senior Bess Waldram and junior Ally Bojczuk.
Despite Notre Dame taking the doubles match, NC State took a majority of the courts in singles.
Rogers defeated Notre Dame’s Spence 6-2, 6-3. Reami had little trouble holding off the Fighting Irish’s Freeman, securing both matches 6-1. Daniel swept Lilien 6-2, 6-0. Keberle struggled initially with Notre Dame’s Bojczuk, losing the first set 7-6, but quickly recovered to take the next two sets 7-5 and 6-3.
The Wolfpack’s singles losses came from Smith who was defeated in her match against Corse 6-4, 6-2. Junior Lix Norman also struggled to earn a set against Notre Dame’s sophomore Maeve Koscielski and was defeated within two sets, 6-1 and 6-3.
The Wolfpack will continue on the road for its next game this Sunday against Louisville in Louisville, Kentucky, beginning at noon.
