This weekend, the NC State track and field team ventured to Clemson, South Carolina, where it concluded its indoor season at the ACC conference championship meet.
In a highly contested meet that featured many of the nation’s top competitors, the men and women took fifth and eighth, respectively.
The second day of competition was highlighted by a stellar showing in the field events. Redshirt senior Joshua Davis made history in the men’s weight throw; heaving the weight to an ACC record of 78’2.25”.
This mark was a personal best for the Pelham, NC native and sets him up to contend for an NCAA indoor title.
In the women’s weight throw, redshirt junior Lauren Williams took All-ACC honors. Her effort of 66’0.5” was good for a fifth-place finish.
This trend of success was further emulated in the jumps where the duo of junior Christopher
Garrick and sophomore JaTory Reid took fourth and sixth, respectively.
Garrick elevated to a height of 6’11.5”; while Reid achieved a new personal best of 6’10.25”.
Capitalizing off of its historically competitive distance crew, the Pack was able to further excel on day two.
On the women’s side, redshirt senior Erika Kemp placed fifth in the 5000-meter run, recording a time of 16:41.91.
Meanwhile, the duo of redshirt junior Patrick Sheehan and junior Elijah Moskowitz collected sixth and eighth respectively.
On the third and final day of competition, the Pack continued to step up to the plate.
Junior Gabriele Cunningham placed seventh in both the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles, posting swift marks of 7.33 and 8.35, respectively.
The trio of sophomore Cravont Charleston, sophmore Dylan Peebles, and senior Shannon Patterson further showcased the Wolfpack’s depth in sprints.
Charleston and Peebles earned third and seventh in the 60m, posting swift marks of 6.68 and 6.83, respectively.
Peebles further impressed in the 200-meter run; he earned third place and a spot on the podium. Patterson joined Peebles in the 200m;,placing fourth. The duo posted scorching marks of 20.96 and 21.09, respectively.
The Pack continued to make headway in the field as well. True freshman Michelle Cobb earned fifth in the women’s triple jump with a mark of 41’5.25”.
Meanwhile, redshirt freshman Tyson Fortenberry took seventh in the men’s shot put and redshirt junior Lauren Evans earned fourth in the women’s shot put.
Fortenberry’s distance of 55’7.5” was a new personal best for the Gastonia, NC native.
However, the highlight performance of the day came in the women’s 3000-meter run.
Sophomore Elly Henes emerged with the lone first-place finish of the day. Her time of 9:18.67 proved enough to edge out a highly competitive field.
Henes was accompanied by veteran Erika Kemp who picked up her second top-eight finish of the meet, placing seventh with a time of 9:24.77.
Up next, the Pack will send a host of its top performers to compete at the NCAA indoor national track meet in College Station, Texas.
