Following up on last month’s Rocksmith launch party, Ubisoft once again returned to the Wolves’ Den here at N.C . State. This time, learning to play guitar was replaced by the hidden blades of master assassin Ezio Auditore , with Assassin’s Creed: Revelations taking center stage.
The event, which took place last Wednesday night, allowed students to come out and try the latest game out on Xbox 360 or PS3 , as well as providing them with a chance to win various items related to the game and other Ubisoft properties. Free Hotbox pizza was also offered to those who came out to try the game.
Tim MacNeil , a senior in math education and the Ubisoft student representative, has found it easier to help build hype for Revelations, as the Assassin’s Creed series has a well-established fan base already.
This sentiment extended beyond just the launch party. For the past three weeks, MacNeil has hosted a tournament for the multiplayer mode of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood at Cary gaming café RUaGamer . MacNeil said the turn out so far has been encouraging.
“The tournament [series] has gone really well so far,” MacNeil said. “There have been about eight to ten people at each of the first two events, and 10 have already signed up for the next one.”
The fourth and final tournament will take place next Friday, and the winner will receive a copy of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations to call their own. Interested students can check out the ‘Ubisoft at N.C. State’ Facebook page for more information.
Though this is the last Ubisoft launch party for the semester, MacNeil already has plans for the spring, with at one more launch party for students to look forward to.
“[Ubisoft] usually tries to have three to four launch parties per year,” MacNeil said. “The next one is going to be for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.”
At the moment, though, the focus rested on the latest game in the Assassin’s Creed series, which has been built up as the last game to feature the popular leading man Ezio Auditore. However, the overarching storyline in the game will continue into next year, with a final title set to end the 2012 arc started back in 2007’s Assassin’s Creed.
The title also provides an updated multiplayer experience. First introduced to the series last year, Revelations has brought several new features to online play, including the ability to customize characters, join a player guild, and create a unique coat of arms. Further, numerous new game types have been added in, including a ‘Capture the Flag’ mode that has been requested by fans.
Overall, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations proved a bigger draw than the previous Rocksmith launch party, showing the power of the franchise. The event was another chance for students to see the latest from a big name game developer, with more chances on the way in the future.
