At the Penn Relays and LSU Alumni Gold meets this weekend, the Wolfpack track and field team performed well as they usually do. Over the two separate meets, junior Grace Hartman and sophomore Tyson Adams both climbed to the NCAA Division I No. 6 ranking in their respective events.
In Pennsylvania, Hartman set a meet record in the 1500 meter with a time of 4:07.19, enough for No. 6 in NCAA Division I this season and No. 2 on the program’s all-time top-10 list. Sophomore Angelina Napoleon finished just behind Hartman with a time of 4:13.02, securing a personal best and No. 7 on the Pack’s all-time list.
Down in the Bayou, Adams placed second in the long jump with a distance of 7.90m. It earned him No. 6 in NCAA Division I this season and No. 4 on the program’s all-time list. Adams has placed either first or second in every event this season as he continues his impressive sophomore year.
Graduate Makala Wright earned a season-best in the hammer throw with a distance of 56.26m. Earning her 10th place, Wright was just under two meters short of a personal best.
The Pack earned two more top-10 finishes in the throwing events at the Penn Relays during the weekend. Senior Jakerra Covington placed seventh in the javelin with a throw of 41.38m. Junior Ta’Honny Exum placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 14.69m.
Freshman Audrey Jenkins set an outdoor-season best in the high jump when she leaped 1.65m to finish ninth. The red-and-white had a pair of top-10 finishes in the women’s triple jump, with freshman Mariama Hunt and sophomore Jayda Hunter placing fifth and seventh, respectively.
In the 3000 meter men’s steeplechase, senior Matt Bogdan clocked a new personal best with a time of 8:52.71. It was enough to earn him 14th place in the LSU Alumni Gold meet.
The men’s hurdle runners had some impressive finishes in the 110 meter and 400 meter events. Freshman James Coleman placed seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.49. Coleman’s top-10 finish comes a week after he earned a personal best and the win at the Virginia Challenge. The freshman is closing the year on the right note, getting some of his best results of the season in the final stretch.
In the 110 meter, senior Alexander Nunley finished ninth with a time of 14.23. He finished 0.02 seconds off his personal best that he similarly set last week at the Virginia Challenge.
The Wolfpack has one more meet before the postseason begins. Taking place not too far from Raleigh, NC State will take part in the Duke Twilight meet in Durham on Sunday, May 4.
