NC State Athletics announced Friday that men’s basketball head coach Mark Gottfried and women’s basketball head coach Wes Moore have agreed to contract extensions that will keep them with their teams through 2020.
Gottfried’s annual pay will increase from $2.06 million to $2.48 million. Moore’s annual pay will increase from $385,000 to $460,000.
In Gottfried’s first four years at NC State, the Pack averaged 23 wins per season compared to the average of 16.8 the 20 years before. His team wins an average of 10 ACC games per season, nearly doubling the previous 20 years record of 5.9 conference wins per season.
Gottfried has led his squad to four straight NCAA appearances, two of which made it to the Sweet 16. In the 20 years prior to Gottfried, the Wolfpack had only made a total of five NCAA appearances.
Recruiting is a key factor in the rebuilding of a successful basketball program, and Gottfried has shown what he can do in that area over the last couple of years. The nation’s top-ranked point guard Dennis Smith Jr. committed to play for the Wolfpack next fall, and is the highest-ranked recruit NC State has signed since 1998.
Entering his third season as the NC State women’s basketball coach, Moore has recorded a total of 43 victories and has made two postseason appearances. In 2014, Moore had a big season, as he was named ACC Coach of the Year by ESPN.com and was also a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year.
In his first season with the Pack, Moore earned 25 wins and NC State was a top-10 team for the first time since 2001. He recorded his 600th career win in March, making him the ninth women’s coach to do so in less than 800 games.
Moore has also been on top of his recruiting game, snagging three top recruits and making his the 12th-ranked class in the nation, moving up four spots from his 16th ranked recruiting class last season.
Both teams opened their seasons Friday at PNC Arena, with the women winning against Villanova 70-64, followed by the men falling to William & Mary 85-68.
