About 40 Kappa Delta sorority sisters will be in temporary housing the first five weeks of the school year while construction workers complete their new house in Greek Court.
Complications in both the planning and building phases have pushed back the grand opening of the house from July 15 to the first week of October.
Despite the delay, the women, including Kappa Delta president Kris Gower , aren’t complaining.
“We understood that there will be problems when we started this project. Mainly all of us are extremely excited about the new house and the people at Greek Life,” said Gower , a senior in international studies.
N.C. State is providing these students with accommodations at their old duplex, where many lived last year.
Former Student Body President Chandler Thompson, a recent graduate, said she thinks the wait will be worth the benefits of a new house.
“If I hadn’t just graduated, I definitely would have waited out those five weeks to move into the new home. It’s just incredible,” Thompson said.
The new house features 12 bedrooms with up to four girls sharing a bathroom.
It is the first privately-funded chapter house in the Greek Village Project at the University, according to Gower .
In addition to an upgraded heating and cooling system, the house will get some significant security updates, including a master panel to display open doors or windows and help warn of potential threats. The security system is comparable to the one at N.C. State’s Carmichael Gymnasium.
The temporary house is across the street from the one under construction, and the sisters will still be able to use the sorority meal plan or their personal dining services.
One of the main innovations incorporated into the new KD house will be the addition of a full-service kitchen, something not common among Greek houses.
Gower said this will provide sisters with more dining options, which they are excited about.
“I really can’t say enough how phenomenal the support system has been. People on the outside may think that someone really messed up or something went drastically wrong, but that really is not the case here,” Gower said.
Thompson said Kappa Delta’s national organization has been outstanding throughout the N.C. State chapters dilemma, and its reaction reflects the support it provided her throughout her tenure at NCSU .
“The only thing that is kind of a bummer is that KD’s new girls won’t get the full experience of move-in week since it will be a little inconvenient having to move twice, but I know that [ Gower ] will take care of them,” Thompson said.
The complaints from the sisters’ parents have been minimal.
“We have a really close-knit community here, and I know that parents understand the difficulty of the situation,” Gower said.
The past few years have been devoted to transitioning Greek Court to Greek Village, and according to Gower the new Kappa Delta house is the first of many more to come.
