After 11 seasons of coaching the women’s soccer program, head coach Laura Kerrigan is resigning from her position. The decision was made Monday, only a day after her current team completed its season with a 5-2 loss to Florida State, finishing 8-12 on the year.
Kerrigan, who played for the Wolfpack in the 1980’s, was the third coach in the women’s soccer program’s history. She had a 87-107-16 overall record since she was hired on Dec. 8, 1997.
“I appreciate the opportunity I was given to work with such tremendous student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff here at N.C. State. This university and the people here hold many special memories for me, and it has been a pleasure to serve the NC State athletics community,” Kerrigan said in an official statement.
In her tenure, Kerrigan always put emphasis on being a great student, not just an athlete. Her efforts have resulted in the Wolfpack have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for seven straight seasons.
“We are very thankful to Laura Kerrigan for her 11 years of loyal service and dedication to N.C. State. She recruited some outstanding young women to N.C. State and her teams always performed with class, integrity and sportsmanship,” Athletics director Lee Fowler said in a prepared statement. “She instilled the same dedication in her players that she showed during her time as an all-time great Wolfpack athlete and more importantly an all-time great student-athlete.”
According to N.C. State Athletics, a national search will be conducted to find a replacement immediately.
