As students trickle out of Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday after N.C. State’s homecoming football game against Boston College, the Wolfpack Club Ice Hockey team hopes that the supporters will head down the road to watch the Pack take on Clemson in its season opener.
All home games are played at the Rec Zone off of 440 Wake Forest Exit. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for nonstudents, and puck drop is set for 9:30 p.m.
Clemson pounded Carolina, 9-2, in its home opener on Sept. 19. The team will face off against UGA at home tomorrow night before traveling to Raleigh, and State will look to take advantage of their opponent’s fatigue.
Jonathan Hires, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, says that he has heard that Clemson likes to throw the body around.
“I hear they’re a pretty physical team, so we’ll have to tough it out and pull out a win,” Hires said. “It’ll be a rough one, a crowd pleaser.”
Hires said he doesn’t expect that Clemson will catch his teammates with their trousers — “pads” may be more appropriate — down.
“We have a couple of players who really know how to hit well,” Hires said. “We’re a fast team, but we also have a physical element.”
Wes White, a senior in business management, said a decent turnout will do wonders for the team’s morale.
“It would be a good experience for my fellow students to see some ACC hockey,” White said. “From what I’ve seen so far in the locker room, the guys have a lot of heart and determination. It would be good to start off our season with a good showing of fan support.”
According to White, there are 10 to 12 players from last year’s roster returning, including captain and ACC leading scorer Dan Masiulis, a senior in technology education.
“We’re going to be looking for a lot out of him this year,” White said.
Although not much is expected of rival Carolina this season, the Pack has several other opponents that it is watching closely.
“Georgetown has been pretty good for a while now, and Duke has been getting better and better in recent years,” Hires said. “But overall, I like our chances.”
