Two varsity athletes are no longer on their respective teams after run-ins with the law.
Dejon Bivens, a freshman mens tennis player charged with one count of crime against nature in connection with an Oct. 27 incident involving a teammate as the victim, is no longer enrolled at the University.
Bivens’ court date has twice been continued and is now set for Feb. 22.
Men’s tennis coach Jon Choboy said Tuesday it wasn’t his decision for Bivens to leave. He also said the situation hasn’t been a distraction for his team.
Meanwhile, Christopher Sutton, a sophomore wrestler who faces felony charges for five counts of breaking or entering into a motor vehicle and one count of possession of stolen goods as well as misdemeanor charges for one count of resisting a public officer, has been dismissed from his team, coach Carter Jordan said Tuesday.
“It’s an unfortunate thing,” Jordan said.
Sutton redshirted his freshman season and was in his second year with the team. Jordan said Sutton was contrite and disappointed about what happened and told Jordan the charges were true.
The coach also didn’t rule out the possibility of Sutton one day returning to the team.
“I never say never,” the coach said.
Jordan also said Sutton needs to focus on straightening out his life. He noted Sutton was going through the Student Conduct disciplinary process and doing community service.
Additionally, redshirt freshman fullback Cedric Hickman of the football team faces felony charges for five counts of breaking or entering a motor vehicle.
Hickman is suspended indefinitely from the football team, according to Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations Annabelle Myers.
Hickman and Sutton’s court dates were set for Jan. 2 for most of those charges, but the cases have been continued until July.
Hickman played in 10 games in 2007, starting only the Sept. 29 Louisville game, where he caught three passes for 11 yards and his lone touchdown of the year. For the season, he had four catches for 20 yards.
