The men’s basketball team defeated Presbyterian College 50-43 Saturday afternoon at the RBC Center. After N.C. State’s sixth win in a row, Gavin Grant said the team is still doing well, despite the low scoring and many mistakes.
“A win is a win,” Grant said. “All that matters is getting that W.”
The game started off strong with a dunk by J.J. Hickson. Then the energy faded quickly. With Presbyterian going basket for basket with State, it was hard for the Pack to break ahead.
“I thought we were prepared. At practice we were crisp,” Grant said. “But we didn’t come out like that.”
The problem lied with the Presbyterian defense covering Hickson the entire game.
“We just couldn’t get the ball to J.J.” Grant said. “And we just weren’t making shots.”
On the sidelines it was hard to miss Presbyterian’s coach Gregg Nibert. He is a very animated coach that was constantly yelling at his team and the referees and was pacing inside the coach’s box. Nibert’s animated style of coaching helped Presbyterian, which entered the game with a record of 1-17, stay ahead of State during the first half.
The first half ended with State down 20-17. And no fouls on either side.
“Presbyterian just kept the ball moving,” coach Sidney Lowe said. “We talked about it during halftime, and one of the assistant coaches said, ‘Let’s just get a foul.'”
About five minutes into the second Grant scored a basket to take the lead for the Wolfpack, which changed up the momentum.
“They played solid,” Lowe said. “Yet, we were struggling on offense, and I wanted to speed things up, so we went into full-court defense.”
According to Courtney Fells, State’s biggest problem was energy.
The biggest lead of the game for State, 47-38, came with less than a minute left to play.
