Upon elimination of four warnings for Will Langley, candidate for Student Body President, the results of the elections for the position were released. The Elections Commission stated there will be a runoff between Langley and Will Quick next Monday and Tuesday.Langley received 38.5 percent of the votes and Quick received 26.5 percent.”I look forward to a spirited runoff with Will Quick,” Langley said. Quick said he was optimistic about the runoff.”I’m glad I made the runoff,” Quick said. “But it’s unfortunate that it’s with a candidate that so blatantly disregarded the rules.”Kevin Hassell, chair of the Elections Commission, said he felt the meeting was productive.”It’s really good for the candidates and Student Government as a whole as well as for the students to have the runoffs finally set,” he said.Langley did receive a warning and a $50 fine, a first in the history of student elections, for the alleged coercion of commissions member Danielle Seale. Seale wrote in an e-mail, “I received a phone call from Will Langley to my cell phone at 5:12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4th.” Seale went on to say she was calling in response to an official request by the commission that he appear at a subcommittee meeting. She said she notified him that if he didn’t attend, the commission had the authority to continue the meeting without him. “Will then stated, ‘Well tomorrow when I win, Forrest will swear me in right away and then I will give you all good jobs.'”Langley said he apologized for losing his temper on the phone.”If anything I was arrogant on the phone and I apologize for that,” he said.Seale abstained from the decision to warn and fine Langley, saying she hopes he realizes “that this is not personal at all.”The Student Body Statutes define an attempt to bribe or coerce an elections official as including “promise or suggestion of appointment or reappointment to positions of authority.”Student Senate implemented and defined the $50 fine in the statutes as a possible consequence for the first time this session. The commissions reduced the severity of an allegation that the candidate produced chalk advertisements within 50 feet of a polling station at Fountain Dining Hall from a warning to a notification. The group resolved that Langley made all possible efforts to prevent this violation and cooperated fully when it was brought to his attention.”I made a good faith effort to get out there and erase as soon as I heard about it,” Langley said.Langley shook hands with Adam Compton, who was announced as Student Body Treasurer last night, upon hearing the results.Langley indicated he was looking forward to a runoff when he turned to Joe Sevits and said, “Well, Joe, ready to start working?” Sevits worked for Cody Williams, who was running for Student Body President and who received 17.8 percent of the votes, but is now working for Langley.Quick said he is still optimistic heading in to next week’s runoff.”The best way is to campaign in an honest and positive way,” Quick said. “The negativity hurts the campus and the relationship between the different branches of government. This campus needs an honest leader.”
