A switch has occurred. No, it’s not the weather or the colors of the leaves. It’s the pants that come with the weather change. In the past years, they have been coming closer and closer to the legs, hugging the hips rather than hanging off the butt.
Now, instead of being barely held up by belts, men’s jeans are decorated with belts.
Two legs at a time, fitted jeans are taking over men’s fashion.
Fitted clothes are easier to find in stores and considered better looking, according to Blake DiCosola, a senior in business and marketing education.
Eric Canonge, a senior in mechanical engineering, said fitted jeans look more professional than their baggier counterparts.
“It conveys a confidence of how you feel about your body,” he said.
Men’s fashion is much like women’s fashion, according to Canonge, because when women are confident with their bodies, they wear tighter clothes. Men also wear clothes that show off their bodies when they are comfortable with them.
Fitted jeans allow a person’s figure to be visible.
“You can see me instead of hiding me,” DiCosola said.
He said one reason he does not like baggier clothes is they are concealing.
“[Fitted jeans] hug a little more,” DiCosola said.
However, Canonge gives warning to those wanting to try fitted jeans because they do not leave room for error.
“Any imperfections [in your body] are going to be shown,” Canonge said.
For this reason, he suggests people who wear fitted jeans “would want to be at least a little bit in shape.”
DiCosola agreed. He said fitted jeans are appropriate for the average build.
However, not all the average-build guys enjoy wearing fitted jeans.
Kenny Graham, a sophomore in business management, said he wouldn’t be able to wear fitted jeans.
“They’d be so uncomfortable,” he said.
Matt Charter, a sophomore in mechanical engineering, agreed.
“It’s not as much about fashion as comfort,” he said.
However, fitted jeans can be comfortable. The wearer must take some time to get used to them, but once that happens, they are perfect for everyday wear, DiCosola said.
He said he would not lounge around the house in them, but they can be just as comfortable as baggy jeans when going to class.
“They’re not as comfortable as [baggy jeans] but they’re not uncomfortable,” DiCosola said.
A person who made a direct conversion from baggy jeans to fitted jeans would probably think fitted jeans are far too constricting, but Canonge said they are comfortable for daily activities.
Canonge did admit he wears looser jeans when he rides his motorcycle, though, but said he would not classify them as baggy jeans, just looser than fitted ones.
Loose jeans, baggy jeans or fitted jeans, the style choices are growing as companies invent new names — straight leg, tapered leg, boot cut — but the prices are not going up as the pant legs get tighter.
“There is a misconception that you have to go to DKNY and pay $120 [to get a pair of fitted jeans],” Canonge said.
He said if people shop around, they will be able to find “a better deal.” Fitted jeans can be found for around $30 in a department store, according to Canonge.
DiCosola doesn’t spend a lot of money on his jeans, but he said he still manages to mainly wear fitted jeans.
Fitted jeans are becoming more readily available, and, according to DiCosola, they are something that could help students’ fashion.
“Most people could stand to benefit from giving [fitted jeans] a try,” he said.
