Crest Whitestrips is hosting a national competition entitled “Smile State” among universities using the social networking Web site Facebook.com. The four universities who have the most group members by next semester will win a stop on the Smile State Tour.
Chaun Tsay, a sophomore in management, is head of the N.C. State chapter of the Smile State program.
“The goal of Smile State is to bring new things to campus. We are trying to bring a sense of excitement to the student body and campus life,” Tsay said. “The competition aspect of Smile State will hopefully raise school spirit.”
The Smile State Tour is a free concert that will include acts from a major record label, according to Facebook.com.
Tsay said the students of the winning school will be allowed to choose the performing artist.
“I think that if a lot of people participate we could have an awesome concert when it’s all said and done. It could be a neat experience to have some of our favorite performers right on N.C. State’s campus,” Audrey Wilson, a junior in communication and member of Smile State, said.
Tsay said that the main events will begin within the next few weeks.
“So far, we have had a few Rock Paper Scissors games for prizes during class changes,” he said. “I wanted to build up an interest first so that students would know about our events.”
There are more than a thousand Smile State members at NCSU.
Tsay said they have been recruiting new members at the Atrium and the Brickyard. He will be looking for new assistants soon.
“Volunteers will be rewarded with incentives and experiences, which will look good on resumes,” he said.
Tsay said the program will be hosting free advanced movie screenings and monthly photo contests with prizes ranging from “all-expense paid spring breaks” to “tickets to the National Championship Football games.”
“Think free and VIP. Smile State will bring a major movie screening to all 20 participating campuses — before the film’s released in theaters,” Facebook.com said.
Tsay said despite the involvement of Crest, the program is not selling anything. The events are free to all Smile State members.
“Our main focus is to enrich student life,” he said.
There are 20 universities participating and NCSU is currently ranked number one with 1,045 members. University of California-Santa Barbara is ranked second with 659 members. UNC-Chapel Hill is presently number four with 310 members.
