A tower of stadium lights standing outside the left-field fence at Doak Field fell into the parking lot Saturday after a 10-year-old boy reportedly unscrewed an already-loose bolt at the base of a pole.
No one was injured, and no cars were damaged.
According to Sgt. Jon Barnwell of Campus Police, one of the screws connecting the pole to its foundation was missing and another screw was loose enough for a 10-year-old boy to unscrew. He added there will be no criminal charges brought on the juvenile.
“In order for it to be a crime, there has to be criminal intent,” Barnwell said. “This was just a 10-year-old messing with a bolt.”
Ray Brincefield, assistant athletic director for facilities, said Monday the original set of light poles was built 12 years ago, but the fixtures were rearranged when the University renovated the ball park in 2004.
He said the fallen structure will be entirely cleaned up before the start of class, and that, at the time, the Athletics Department was taking responsibility for the accident.
“If that changes through the investigation, someone else could be responsible on negligence or vandalism,” he said.
Brincefield did not return follow-up phone calls Tuesday or Wednesday for more details on the incident.
Assistant coach Tony Guzzo, who was sitting behind home plate recording pitch speeds, said the lights fell during the seventh inning.
“The timing of it was fortunate in that it was one of the least populated times,” he said.
