After splitting the first two games of the series against Wake Forest, N.C. State won the rubber match and the series with a 3-2 win on the road Sunday.
Freshman Jimmy Gillheeney pitched more than five innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out nine batters, effectively shutting down Wake Forest’s offense enough for the Wolfpack to come home with the win. Senior catcher Caleb Mangum drove in two runs with a home run and a single to lead the Pack.
Mangum singled in the first inning to drive in junior infielder Joe Florio. Mangum homered leading off the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie.
Sunday’s win followed a 16-3 thrashing Saturday by the Deacons. Wake Forest scored eight runs in the fifth inning and five more runs in the sixth inning to put State away. Junior pitcher Andrew Brackman lasted four innings, giving up six runs — five of them earned — on nine hits.
According to N.C. State media relations, Wake Forest’s eight-run and five-run innings were the eighth and ninth times, respectively, State’s pitching allowed more than two runs in an inning. It was also the first time it happened more than once in a game.
In game one of the Pack’s first road ACC series of the season, State needed 10 innings to turn back Wake Forest. Florio hit a triple in the top of the tenth inning to drive home the go-ahead run and propel State to the win.
Trailing 4-3 heading into the top of the ninth, junior Ryan Pond led off with a single. Freshman outfielder Jeremy Synan followed with a potential double-play ball that was misplayed by the defense, allowing Pond to reach third base on an error.
Junior Ramon Corona hit into a double play, but Pond was able to score on the play, tying the game at 4-4 and forcing extra innings.
Florio then tripled home the go-head run. Pond singled home Florio to give the Pack a 6-4 lead.
State returns to Doak Field Wednesday night for a 6 p.m. game with UNC-Greensboro.
