The Eta Kappa chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority hosted its fourth annual Anchor Splash fundraiser Sunday night at the Pullen Park Aquatics center. This event brought together 24 fraternities, sororities and co-ed Greek organizations for this aquatic-based competition.”We started doing Anchor Splash because other chapters across the nation were having great success with it,” Sally Taylor, a senior in sociology and a member of the Delta Gamma sorority, said. “It’s a great way for us to raise money to help out others.”Half of the proceeds from Anchor Splash will be donated to Service for Sight, a Delta Gamma sponsor organization that aims to prevent blindness in children and improve the quality of life for blind men and women. The remaining proceeds will go to Prevent Blindness North Carolina, the Library for the Blind and to a scholarship for a visually impaired child to participate in a Raleigh Parks and Recreation activity. “Anchor Splash is a way to raise money for our philanthropic event, Service for Sight, and other organizations the help the blind while having a good time,” Ginny Cook, a sophomore in political science and a member of Delta Gamma, said. “It’s great to see many of the Greek organizations on campus competing for a good cause.”The Greek organizations competed in four events: Beach Ball Relay, Save the Mermaid, 100 Meter Freestyle Relay and Synchronized Swimming.”We really dominated the synchronized swimming event,” Stephen Knudsen, a freshman in civil engineering and a member of Alpha Phi Omega, said. “The competition for the rest of the events is pretty tough, but a little competition is good for us all.”Points are awarded to each team by a panel of celebrity judges. This year’s judges included Andrew Brackman, a starting pitcher for the N.C. State baseball team, and Stormy, the mascot of the Carolina Hurricanes. The winning teams received trophies and bragging rights.Anchor Splash was started by the Beta Tau Chapter of the University of Miami in 1966 and is now an annual tradition for over 100 Delta Gamma chapters across the nation. Many of this year participants said they would like to see similar events that bring the Greek community together.”There’s nothing quite like Anchor Splash,” Libby Schulte, a junior in mechanical engineering and a member of Alpha Phi Omega, said. “Everyone enjoys it a lot, but I think they should try and include more co-ed Greek organizations.”Schulte’s fraternity took the first place trophy for the co-ed Greek organizations. Zeta Tau Alpha took first for the sororities, and Delta Upsilon was the first place winner for the fraternities. “Anchor Splash was a ton of fun,” Schulte said. “And raising money for a good cause makes it even better.”
