The women’s tennis team heads to Winston Salem to take on in-state rival Wake Forest. This is the team’s third road trip and third ACC opponent in the last two weeks. The last two matches resulted in losses from No. 12 Miami and No. 27 Florida State at 2:30 p.m.
Coach Hans Olsen said he knows ACC competition is strong and the last two losses taught the team about playing doubles and singles.
“We want to bring competitive pressure to our opponents on every court,” he said. “Every court of doubles and every court of singles. I think we let both opponents off the hook in a couple of situations. It’s strong. Every team is good, and every match is a battle. That’s what we expected, and that’s what we will look for in today.”
Junior Julia Roach echoed the coach’s remark.
“Every match was pretty close, but we lost them,” she said. “It’s just given me confidence to go out there and hang with the best teams, so I’ve just gained confidence just to go out and play the rest of the ACC matches.”
Roach, who is 9-2 on the season and just lost her second match last weekend, said it taught her about her playing abilities.
“I’ve gone out there and played within my game style,” Roach said. “I’ve been trying to play aggressive but not do too much and just play within my game style.”
This being another road trip for the team, freshman Daria Petrovic said she doesn’t mind the traveling and enjoys the time spent with her teammates.
“Actually, I like traveling, getting to know the team and stuff. We’re together, and we’re getting to know each other better,” she said. “I mean of course I love playing at home. It’s the best feeling. I don’t mind traveling, and the girls don’t either.”
Petrovic lost to the nation’s No. 1 player — Miami’s Audra Cohen. She said the losses were pretty tight.
“All the matches were really close in the beginning, really close. I guess the other team came out better. It could have went either way that day.” Petrovic said.
Olsen said he’s confident in his girls and indicated both his girls and Wake Forest will be ready for today’s matches.
“They’ll be ready to compete,” he said. “I think that our girls are going to be very ready to compete, and I think it’s going to be a battle. We’ll be ready.”
