N.C. State on Sunday beat Boston College 6-1 at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Complex to give the No. 45 Wolfpack its third win for the ACC.
Even though the girls seemed to be a bit tired from their last match against Maryland, coach Hans Olsen said, State (12-6, 3-4 ACC) still came and delivered a win against Boston College.
“I don’t think we came out with the energy today that we did yesterday. We’re going to look to try to step that up a little bit and be ready to play every time we play,” Olsen said.
“Both days, Saturday and Sunday, they did a great job. I have a lot of confidence in our team, and they just really came out — to only lose one match in two days in the ACC — it’s really tough. They played well.”
The team competed well in doubles, Olsen said, with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles positions, but had a loss at No. 2 doubles. As singles play began, freshman Kate Green and sophomore Alejandra Guerra both finished swift matches against their opponents, earning two wins for State. Green won 6-1, 6-1, and Guerra won with a score of 6-0, 6-1.
Meanwhile, No. 86 Daria Petrovic and freshman Berkeley Brock both played lengthy matches against their respective opponents. During both Petrovic’s and Brock’s matches, their opponents, Lana Krasnopolsky and Dasha Cherkasov, disputed several calls with the umpires.
“You just can’t let things like that get to you, you just have to play the next point,” Brock said.
Olsen said the team didn’t worry about the complaints because it knew debating calls will not determine the outcome of the match.
“Our girls need to stay focused on moving well and competing well and putting a lot of pressure [on the other team],” Olsen said.
Petrovic lost her first set 6-1 and came back to win her second set 7-5. But during the tiebreaker, Petrovic lost 10-6, giving Boston College a win in singles. Brock started off strong, winning her first set 6-0, but lost the second set 6-4.
“I was kind of disappointed,” Brock said. “I won the first set so easily, and it just wasn’t expected. I was up 4-1, and I was kind of on a roll. Then I fell asleep for a while, and I just knew I had to stay in there and compete. I felt like I was better than my opponent, so I was pretty confident going into the third [set].”
After she regained focus, Brock came back with a strong serve, finally winning the third set 7-5.
“Yesterday was three sets for her, a long match today was three sets and both time I thought she just finished with a lot of energy on her first serves,” Olsen said. “To finish both of those was really strong.”
On Saturday, the Pack defeated No. 75 Maryland 7-0 — the team’s second consecutive shut-out of a ranked ACC opponent. State beat No. 69 Virginia Tech 7-0 last Sunday.
Next weekend, State will again host back-to-back home games, with Clemson visiting on Saturday and Georgia Tech visiting on Sunday.
