Members of the Student Wolfpack Club have made a banner for students to sign so they can show their support for coach Kay Yow, who returned to the hardwood in January after a third bout with breast cancer.
Amanda Wujcik, a freshman in sport management and board member in the club, came up with the idea after the basketball team’s season ended.
“Right after they lost I wanted to do something to keep the spirit,” Wujick said, referring to the support Yow had been receiving from fans.
Chris Hathcock, a sophomore in aerospace engineering, stood with the banner in the Brickyard Monday and Tuesday to solicit student signatures. He said once people realized the club was only asking for signatures, they were more than willing to sign it.
Some, like Kim Hartofelis, a sophomore in communication, signed the banner because Yow has inspired them.
“Her strength and grace mean a lot to me and how she leads her team to victories on and off the court,” Hartofelis said. “She’s a real inspiration.”
Others signed the banner on behalf of those who could not. Student services employee Marcie Mock signed the banner for herself and for her 81-year-old mother in Chicago who was touched by Yow’s story when she heard it on the news.
Hathcock estimated the banner had at least 200 signatures as of Tuesday afternoon. The club hopes to present the banner to Yow personally once it has been filled with signatures.
“I want everyone to sign it,” Wujcik said. “It doesn’t matter if you go to State or not.”
