The softball team (29-16) defeated the Charlotte 49ers in two games yesterday at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The first game’s final score was 6-0, while the second game was 8-0.
During the first game, senior pitcher Abbie Sims passed the 1,000 career strikeouts mark during the second inning. Sims also had her seventh shutout of the season.
During the second game, the Pack was able to finish the game in five innings because it was up by eight runs. Senior third baseman Jen Chamberlin gave the team a three-run home run in the first inning.
State also got some help from Shanna Smith, who doubled to left center field in the fifth inning and junior pinch hitter Ashleigh Davis, who drove a single to right field later in the inning.
A few plays later, State had scored enough runs to win the game 8-0.
Coach Lisa Navas said the weather was a concern when the team played last weekend at Boston College and that she was worried about how her players would play on Tuesday.
“I was very proud of the kids; we played well this past weekend against Boston College,” Navas said. “We gave them Monday off because we were so cold up there. I wasn’t sure how they would respond, but they came to play today and we’ve been having a good time. Seniors kind of had a meeting the other day and decided to come out here and have fun, and so it’s working for us.”
The team is now on a season-high, five-game winning streak, but despite the wins, Sims said the team has a tough road ahead as it will head out on the road Thursday to play a doubleheader against UNC Greensboro.
“It’s going to be a tough week to be going with that because there are so many games this week that we are going to have to stay really focused,” Sims said. “Make sure we stretch and stay loose, especially with all these games. So I think that we can win a couple more before we end it.”
Freshman outfielder Allison Presnell said she feels good about the team’s winning streak.
“It’s a great feeling. We were looking into the season, and now it’s coming into a close. And we’re looking towards the end of the ACCs and into the tournament,” Presnell said. “We are looking to peak and continue to work hard and doing the things that we can do best.”
