Tuesday in the Brickyard, Service Raleigh hosted a sumo suit match and gave away treats to put the word out around campus about their tenth annual service day on March 31.
According to the group’s Web site “[Service Raleigh] is the largest student-run service organization in the Triangle area” and is a citywide day of service that Student Government, Pack Scholars and other local donors host that includes landscaping activities such as planting trees.
Nathan Mlot, a senior in mechanical engineering, said he went to the event Tuesday because he “heard Service Raleigh was going to be the event of 2007.”
John Coggin, a sophomore in communication and public relations representative for the group says he hopes that, although the event only lasts one day, it can allow students to find organizations they can help out with in future years.
“The greatest benefit of Service Raleigh is it shows that college students still care about the community,” Coggin said.
Service Raleigh members plan on being around campus at least three more times before the big event. They will be outside of the Talley Student Center from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 21, outside Fountain Dining Hall from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 14 and in the Brickyard again from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 21.
Last year, about 2000 people volunteered and the group said they would like to double the volunteer participation this year.
“This is the tenth year of Service Raleigh,” Hersh Tapadia, a junior in electrical engineering, said. “We’re trying to make it the best.”
