What Happened? The teams kicked off their seasons Oct. 20 in a meet against ECU and William & Mary, and the two teams competed six days later versus Duke, and the women’s team also faced Campbell at home. The men’s team is currently 3-0, while the women’s team stands at 2-2 overall.
In its last meet, the women’s team beat Campbell 249-46 and dropped a close decision to Duke.
“We were a lot closer to Duke than we were last year,” sophomore Sarah Merritt said. “It came down to the last relay. [I’ve noticed that] girls are a lot more enthusiastic and spirited about actually swimming hard and fast early on in the season.”
Who’s Hot?On the women’s side, freshman Jennifer Kopenitz and sophomore Anna Linkenauger are making an impact.
“In the 200 back, they go 1-2 every meet, which is pretty nice,” Merritt said.
The undefeated men have seen improvements across the board early in the season, especially in the events its struggled with in the past.
“Dan Glauber has won the 50 free the past two meets, and that was a shaky event for us last year,” junior Andrew Lester said. “We’re doing a lot better than last year. Everybody has shown up, and we’re kicking [butt] in the meets.”
Who’s Not?Merritt said the women’s team is aiming to improve its times in the 50 and 100 freestyles, while junior Kristin Davies said the divers are working on the fundamentals to place higher at their upcoming meets.
“We’re really working on basics and technical stuff,” Davies said. “That’s going to make a huge difference with all of our dives. We still have a lot to work on and we’re working towards ACC’s.”
What’s Next? Both teams will travel to Atlanta to compete in the three-day Georgia Tech Invite beginning Nov. 16. The large field will feature competition from inside and outside the ACC.
