What Happened?
The Wolfpack dropped another two matches last weekend. After Virginia swept N.C. State on Friday, State took the first game at Virginia Tech on Saturday before losing three straight games. The losses dropped the Pack’s record to 3-16 overall and extend its losing streak to 15 matches — the team is still searching for its first ACC win of the season.
Senior Ashley Wallace said the team’s lack of consistency was apparent this weekend, particularly against Virginia Tech.
“We could have played more consistently,” Wallace said. “We won the first game at Virginia Tech because we played within our system. When we got away from that, we just fell apart.”
Who’s Hot?
Sophomore outside hitter Chrissy Zirpolo showed her versatility this weekend. On Friday, Zirpolo led the team with 12 digs against Virginia. Against Virginia Tech on Saturday, both Zirpolo and freshman Lauren Zaniboni led the team with 16 kills. Zirpolo said coach Charita Stubbs was concerned that Virginia had become familiar with her tendencies and advised that she alter her shot selection.
“That helped me a lot,” Zirpolo said. “If I tried one thing and it didn’t work, then I tried something else until I found something.”
Who’s Not?
The Wolfpack has struggled on the road recently. In the past two years, the team is 0-19 in away matches. The losses at Virginia and Virginia Tech push this year’s away record to 0-6.
What’s Next?
The Wolfpack faces a pair of home conference games this weekend at Reynolds Coliseum. This weekend could be an opportunity for State to break the losing streak as both its opponents are near the bottom of the ACC standings. Miami (8-10, 2-7) is 11th and Florida State (3-6, 6-11) is 10th in the conference.
