On the fourth floor of Vaughn Towers at Carter-Finley Stadium, Robin Segreti watched what she described as one of the greatest plays she has ever seen.
With coaches to her right, review officials to her left and a video camera in front of her, Segreti, a senior in communication, stood quietly as junior receiver John Dunlap hauled in a game-winning touchdown pass against Boston College in the team’s ACC opener — giving N.C. State a dramatic 17-15 win.
Her instinct caused her to want to react, but because of her position as part of the Wolfpack video staff, she couldn’t.
“It’s hard to stay focused, but you have to tell yourself, OK, I can maybe celebrate after it’s over,” Segreti said.
“I was trying to stay calm because I knew there was more left in the game. Everyone on the video staff was pretty excited. I was telling the other guys, ‘Calm down, we have a few more shots to do because anything can happen.'”
Segreti, a video staff member for coach Chuck Amato and his staff, shoots video for every game. The video staff group travels with the team to away games, including the trip to Southern Miss this season, and it makes all the home games. They also attend every practice.
The coaches use the videos from the games and practices to help in preparation for the team’s future games and practices.
“We shoot so that they can review games and review practices,” Segreti said. “So during the week they can figure out what works best and what needs improvement.”
The group is composed of nine student video staff members and three full-time employees.
Included in the staff is Christian Sanders a sophomore in sports management. His brother, Brandon Sanders, played for the Pack from 2000-2003 as a center.
Brandon knew Jim Sherrill, the assistant director for technology. Sherrill offered Sanders a position on the video staff, and he quickly accepted.
Even though he doesn’t take part in any filming, Segreti said he is very helpful to everyone who does take part in the filming.
“If someone needs anything, he is there to help us. Christian is a great help,” Segreti said.
Aside from helping the video staff, Sanders also helps put together videos, including some of the pre-game videos.
“I cut tape and put together highlight video,” Sanders said. “I basically just help put together the videos.”
But for the most part, Sanders, who said Amato “treats the players and the video crew with the upmost respect,” said he does a good job of keeping his cool during the games despite being such a big fan of Amato.
“It’s not too tough for me,” Sanders said. “I played football in high school at Garner. We won a lot, so it helps me keep my cool and not get too excited. Anything can happen in football, and I can’t let a sport rule my life.”
