The third time was not a charm for N.C. State on Saturday afternoon.
For the third year in a row the Wolfpack lost on Senior Day — this time falling in double overtime 74-72 to Boston College at the RBC Center.
Ilian Evtimov, Tony Bethel and Cameron Bennerman were all honored with jerseys before the game, however the trio was not able to come away with a win in their final game at home.
Bethel, who finished the game with a team-high 45 minutes while posting nine points and four rebounds, said it’s tough to lose a game the way they did, especially on Senior Day.
“We really wanted to win,” Bethel said. “Since this is our last game — we were doing everything we could and the game just slipped away from us. It’s disappointing because we know we should have won. But we still have a lot more games to play.”
Bethel had a chance to win the game in the first overtime, but Sean Williams blocked his shot with 5.1 seconds remaining.
In the second overtime, Engin Atsur had two opportunities to win the game. With the Pack down by two, Atsur’s first shot was a three point attempt that Williams blocked yet again, and then with only seconds remaining, Atsur missed an off-balance jump shot.
Evtimov, who finished the game with 16 points, five rebounds and three assists, said having the seniors lose on their last home is hard to swallow.
“We were playing at home and we wanted to come away with the [win],” Evtimov said. “We wanted to be remembered as the team that would play double overtimes and keep winning. But that’s not going to happen. We just lost today, and it’s very tough for us.”
The game did not go as planned for Bennerman either. He finished the game with 14 points and three turnovers on 4-of-11 for shooting.
“It isn’t good to lose with these circumstances,” Bennerman said. “We lost our second straight home game and it’s just really tough to deal with.”
Even with the loss, Gavin Grant said it wasn’t a terrible way to go out for the seniors.
“I’m pretty sure they are feeling a little down right now,” Grant said. “But they have nothing to be ashamed of. It was a great game. It’s not like they went out there and lost by 20. They lost by two points to a good team in double overtime.”
He added he was pleased with the play of all three of his senior teammates.
“All the seniors played well,” Grant said. “I think Cam stepped up and played really well. Ilian is playing hurt and he is playing with heart. Tony was himself, he got loose balls and knocked down some shots.”
The seniors accounted for more than half of the team’s points, scoring 39 of the Pack’s 72 points.
Cedric Simmons said they kept the team in the game when they looked like they might fall out of contention.
“I know they wanted to leave on a positive note at their last home game,” Simmons said. “All three of them played well. They all made hustle plays and left it on the court for their final home game. They gave us a chance to win.”
Coach Herb Sendek said he wished the seniors could have left their home court on a good note.
“It doesn’t come easy for any of us,” he said. “Certainly on Senior Night, it would have been great to get a great win. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that.”
