The annual N.C. State Invitational will commence today at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center and will last through Sunday. This weekend’s tournament is the team’s second tournament this year and will be the final home tournament this fall.
N.C. State is hosting 16 schools — including Appalachian State, Campbell, East Carolina, High Point, UNC-Asheville, Western Carolina and other local schools.
According to coach Hans Olsen, the Wolfpack will look to carry the success from the St. Mary’s Classic into this weekend’s play.
“The best thing about the first tournament was it gave us more of a focus on what we needed to work on,” Olsen said. “It narrowed our focus and we’ll be a little more prepared this weekend.”
Olsen said State will look to continue its intense play, but he said he will make some adjustments for improvement as well. Though he was pleased with the competitiveness in singles play, Olsen wants to see more aggressiveness in doubles matches.
“The things that went well I thought were movement and competitive intensity,” Olsen said. “We’re going to try some different doubles matchups than we used in the first tournament. We’re looking to find more aggressive doubles patterns, and we’ve been working a lot and spending a lot of time on that in practice.”
The Pack will look to the leadership of seniors Augustina Arechavaleta as well as Lauren and Allison Barry to lead the way, according to Olsen.
“It’s the last fall home tournament and I feel the seniors will be the ones to watch,” Olsen said. “They’ll be looking to make a splash.”
Arechavaleta said the impressive play of the newcomers should be a deciding factor against upcoming competition. In the St. Mary’s Classic, freshmen Berkeley Brock and Daria Petrovic emerged as two of the more successful performers.
“We’re really excited and looking forward to it,” Arechavaleta said. “We have some new girls that are really gonna turn some heads.”
Brock, who lead the Pack in the St. Mary’s Classic by winning the singles flight four consolation finals, anticipates the team will prevail victorious this weekend. He said the team has been laboring diligently in preparation.
“We’ve done a lot of the same stuff,” Brock said. “We’ve been practicing really hard. Everyone’s playing well and we all expect to do well this weekend.”
Olsen said his team should have a successful weekend.
“N.C State is going to be the team to beat,” Olsen said. “The pressure to win will fall on other teams. These other schools should have a hard time matching up.”
