What happened? After starting the season with a 3-1 record in the North Carolina Central Tournament earlier this month, the team has gone 0-6 in the last two tournaments they’ve played. In the Campus USA Credit Union Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., the team lost to No. 7 Florida, No. 19 Santa Clara and Georgia Southern. The Pack hosted the Holiday Inn Brownstone Volleyball Challenge, but lost the three matches against East Carolina, Akron and Dartmouth.
Who’s hot?Freshman setter Alex Smith was named to the All-Tournament team in the Holiday Inn Brownstone Volleyball Challenge this past weekend. Smith recorded 40 assists against Akron, and 45 assists and an attack percentage of .357 in the tournament. Another freshman that is making noise is outside hitter Megan Rehmer, who has been in the rotation for the Pack. Rehmer collected a double-digit dig total of 11 and 10 against Akron and East Carolina, respectively.
What’s next? The team will be hosting North Carolina Friday at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Coliseum. Both Rehmer and Smith realize they are new to the rivalry, but they understand how big it is from the upperclassmen. Coach Charita Stubbs said the team needs to focus on one match at a time, and that the season is broken down into three phases. Stubbs said the team is now in phase two, which is ACC play, but is trying to prepare her girls for game-time situations. Stubbs said her team is excited about ACC play, but the team is focused on the most current match. “We haven’t talked about Carolina at all. We haven’t talked about the ACC matches at all. It was more of a match-by-match situation,” she said.
