What happened? The team is riding a six-game unbeaten streak and has gone 4-0-2 in that stretch. It defeated both Elon and Virginia Commonwealth this past weekend by scores of 1-0. Sophomore midfielder Meredith Parrilla provided the offensive spark for the Wolfpack with the goal in Sunday’s match. The team has a 5-1-2 record overall.
“We’re working out all the kinks that we had in the beginning,” sophomore goalkeeper Sydney Little said. “Now coming off that win against VCU — they were an extremely good team, one of the biggest challenges we’ve had– we have real good momentum going into the conference play.”
Who’s hot?Sophomore defender Katie Ruiz set up both of the Pack’s winning goals this weekend with well-placed kicks. Little recorded consecutive shutouts in those games and has not allowed a goal in more than 308 minutes of play.
“Sydney has saved our butts more than once,” junior midfielder Tami Krzeszewski said. “She’s come up so big on numerous occasions to help us stay in the lead.”
In addition, the Wolfpack has benefited from balanced scoring, according to coach Laura Kerrigan.
“Different players are coming up with a big game each time, and that’s great,” Kerrigan said. “It’s so much harder for teams to defend against if they can’t key on one or two players, and so the more we can have a varied attack, the better off we’re gonna be.”
Who’s not?The team’s offensive efficiency continues to be a main concern. Despite State’s impressive record, it has scored only six goals in its past five games. The team has out-shot its opponents 68-36, but has little to show for it.
“The big thing will be to get on the end of some of the balls we’re putting in the box,” Kerrigan said.
What’s next?State will travel to Miami tomorrow and take on the Hurricanes on Thursday in its first game of ACC play. The team will then play at No. 14 Florida State on Sunday at noon to close out its Southern swing.
