A fight outside the Velvet Lounge early Sunday morning left a former football player injured.
Former football player Glenn Moraven, a junior in communication and sport management, received lacerations to the left side of his head after being hit with a bottle, according to Jim Sughrue, public information officer for the Raleigh Police Department.
Sughrue said EMS transported Moraven to WakeMed for treatment, but the injuries “weren’t serious.”
According to Sughrue, the police are unsure of the circumstances surrounding the incident. He also said no charges have been filed.
“We don’t know if there was one altercation or more than one altercation, but there were some fights taking place,” Sughrue said. “No charges have been filed, largely because it has not been possible to identify who was involved.”
He said officers arrived around 2 a.m. Sunday and took the report. Sughrue said the fights broke up, and RPD started an investigation.
“There were officers nearby, and a passer-by notified them of the fight,” he said. “The fight started inside the bar and carried on outside. Whether or not it was all one related fight or multiple fights was not clear immediately.”
Moraven, who considered running for Student Body President last year, said several men were inside the club whom neither he nor several “teammates” recognized.
“They don’t go to State,” he said. “They were giving us looks all night — mean looks. Nobody had ever seen these guys before.”
Moraven said the other guys at the club kept harassing him and his friends.
“One of my friends was dancing near one of the guys, and he told my friend to step the [expletive] back,” he said. “My boy stepped up to get him to stop, and the other guy maced him.”
Moraven would not confirm how many teammates were present, nor would he confirm the names.
He said he did not remember much of what happened, although he was not knocked unconscious.
“I didn’t need staples or stitches,” Moraven said. “I had several small scalp contusions — the bottle busted on my head and shattered. They gave me some prescriptions, and I’m at 100 percent.”
Moraven added the man who hit him was “taken care of” after he injured Moraven.
Annabelle Myers, assistant athletics director for media relations, said she was unaware of anyone on the football team being involved.
“I haven’t heard anything about it,” she said.
Several calls made Monday afternoon to a phone number listed on the Velvet Lounge’s Web site were unanswered.
