The No. 32 N.C. State women’s tennis team won all six singles matches en route to a 7-0 win over Wilmington on Sunday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Wolfpack (2-0) won two of three doubles matches to go along with the sweep of the singles games. The team of senior Alejandra Guerra and freshman Daria Petrovic won 8-2. Freshman Kate Green and junior Julia Roach won their match against Cassie Martin and Katie Carlson 8-0. Freshmen Catherine Grotz and Berkeley Brock fell to Lauren Isenhour and Kayla Schwenk 7-9 for the only Pack loss on the day.
Roach said she needed to work on her doubles play in practice.
“I want to continue working on doubles, coming to the net, and being aggressive,” Roach said.
In singles play, No. 1 seed Daria Petrovic, the No. 43 player in the nation, won 6-0, 6-3. Brock, the No. 2 seed won her match with Kayla Schwenk 6-2, 6-1. Catherine Grotz bounced back from her doubles loss to win her singles match 6-2, 6-0.
Grotz said it was important to her to come out strong after losing in doubles.
“When I lose one, I don’t want to lose again,” she said.
Assistant coach Mait DuBois applauded his freshmen for strong efforts in their first college matches.
“I’m very impressed with all of our freshmen who this is their first college match,” DuBois said. “Berkeley Brock playing her first college match at No. 1 won decisively. Daria Petrovic played a good match at No. 1.”
The No. 4 seed Roach defeated Cassie Martin 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Neils Barringer won her match 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 seed. Freshman Kate Green finished off the sweep of the Seahawks with her 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 6 seed.
Roach found several things to build on from her success against Wilmington.
“I played aggressive today and that’s what I want to be doing in every match,” she said.
DuBois said he was very pleased with the quality of play that his team showed on Sunday.
“It was really nice that all 11 players played,” DuBois said. “We really showed our depth.”
“The girls had a real hunger to get after it and really took care of business today. We’ll just take the next step forward this week.”
State defeated Gardner Webb earlier in the day 6-1 in its first match of the season.
The Wolfpack travels to Arkansas this Saturday for their next match. The next home match for the team is Friday Feb. 2, against Penn State.
