Valparaiso coach Tracy Woodson heard the umpire warn him.
“You come out here one more time and you’re gone,” the umpire said.
When Woodson left the dugout to argue the fourth balk called on his team in the seventh inning, there was no doubt he would be ejected. That didn’t stop him from letting the umpire know what was on his mind. Coach Elliot Avent was also unhappy as he watched his team commit six errors and saw Vince Gutierrez dislocate his shoulder. N.C. State overcame the errors and officiating to defeat Valparaiso 9-4 Wednesday afternoon at Doak Field.
Both coaches had multiple arguments with the umpires. Avent said that the team can’t spend time worrying about the officiating.
“All you can control is what you can control,” Avent said. “We have to worry about our own play and quit worrying about umpires.”
Gutierrez, the third baseman, dislocated his shoulder diving for a ground ball with two outs in the top of the ninth. Avent was also disappointed with the errors, but he attributed the poor performance to players being at different positions.
“We’re just playing guys at different positions so they are comfortable and trying to rest some guys,” Avent said. “We’re trying to see what guys can do. Right now we are just worried about Vince Gutierrez.”
Freshman pitcher Clayton Shunick said so many errors in a game should be an uncommon occurrence.
“We had some errors today,” Shunick said. “That was really the first kind of blunder we’ve had all season. Hopefully that was just a fluke today and we can come back out strong and play good defense like we have been all year.”
When asked if he thought the defense could become an issue, junior Joe Florio agreed with Shunick.
“I don’t think defense is going to be a problem for us,” Florio said. “We’ve had a real solid infield all year.”
Florio said the recent offensive performance has been encouraging.
“We’ve been struggling with offense the past two weeks or so, and I think we did a really good job the past two days putting some good swings on the ball and producing runs,” Florio said. “That’s the thing we needed to improve on the most, and that’s what we need to continue doing in the next couple weeks.”
