The Union Activities Board is planning several events for students attending summer classes, including two upcoming picnics.
UAB’s first event of the summer, a picnic, will take place today at Harris Field from 6 to 8 p.m.
According to Ricci Kearney, a junior in communication and psychology and Union Activities Board director, the picnic is open to any students still at the University for the first summer session, and is completely free.
“This is the first event I’ve planned,” Kearney said. “This year’s picnic will be bigger than ever.”
After the picnic, there will be a free showing of “Déjà Vu” in the Campus Cinema, Kearney said.
Assistant director of campus activities for the Talley Student Center Rick Gardner has helped to plan the picnic, which became an annual tradition two years ago, he said.
Gardner said 100 to 200 students typically attend the event.
“This year, we have contacted the RAs in Bragaw [Hall], as well as the folks at Wolf Village, Western Manor and King Village to increase attendance,” he said.
According to Gardner, the picnic will include free food, the Vault CXT — a monster pickup truck, bouncy boxing, bungee basketball, free Vault drinks and contests, among other activities.
Kearney said the event includes a special appearance by a campus celebrity.
The other picnic, Kearney said, will take place July 26.
“This will be called Summer Picnic: The Sequel,” he said.
According to Kearney, despite having a low budget for the summer, the UAB is committed to keeping the students in mind.
In addition to these picnics, there is a complete schedule for movies to be shown at the Cinema that can be found online on the Campus Cinema Web site, he said.
Joe Johnson, a senior in computer science, said he would be interested in going to see some of the movies there this summer.
“I like going to Campus Cinema because it is close, cheap, sometimes even free and convenient,” he said.
Kearney said all students and their friends who are at the University this summer should attend.
“I want everyone to come out and make sure they enjoy it,”he said.
