Facebook’s 2009 Bracket Challenge is entering its second weekend, and, as of 5:15 p.m. Thursday, the N.C. State network is led by Jen Craig, a senior in accounting, and Chad Bagwell, who Facebook lists as a 2008 Wake Tech alum.
Craig, whose score of 570 is tied with Bagwell’s for top in the network, said she didn’t consider herself an expert on March Madness.
“I don’t really have a strategy,” Craig said. “I don’t really know much about college basketball at all. I consider it a fluke.”
Though she chalked up her bracket’s performance to luck, she admitted she had done some research.
“I looked at stats I thought were important,” Craig said. “I didn’t want to go based on whose mascot I liked best.”
The scientific approach didn’t last long though, she said.
“After that I just picked what I wanted,” Craig said.
UNC-Chapel Hill is noticeably absent from Craig’s Final Four, which consists of Louisville, Oklahoma, Memphis, and Pittsburgh, but Craig said it had nothing to do with the Wolfpack’s rivalry with the university in Orange County.
“I’m not much of a hater,” Craig said.
Craig picked Gonzaga to upset the Heels, and while her predicted match-up takes place tonight, she isn’t as confident in the Bulldogs as when she wrote the bracket.
“I wasnt sure if Ty Lawson would be playing,” Craig said of the Heels’ point guard who had been questionable before the tournament with a toe injury. “Now it looks like he’s going to play, so I don’t know how it will turn out.”
Bagwell, who could not be reached for comment, has Louisville, Connecticut, UNC-Chapel Hill in his Final Four with Pittsburgh beating the Tar Heels in the finals.
