Eric Low, a freshman studying life sciences and subject of heated Student Government debate released a statement on Sunday on the Facebook group “Free Wolfpack Students.” This was in response to Student Body President Paul Nolan’s remarks made during Wednesday’s Student Senate meeting regarding Low and his mental health.
“Nolan’s comments were wrong and I would appreciate an apology, but dragging this out farther is only going to create a bigger storm,” Low wrote in his Facebook post.
Nolan banned Low from the “Wolfpack Students” Facebook group on Jan. 31 without providing an explanation.
In its third meeting of the semester, the Student Senate proposed a bill sponsored by Sen. Adam Skrzecz, a sophomore studying political science, which requires Nolan to release a statement explaining why Low was removed from WPS.
“I proposed the bill because the process [of Low’s removal] was handled incorrectly,” Skrzecz said. “I don’t agree with everything Low says or does, but [Student Government] should be willing to do this for one student, as we would anyone.”
An executive order was drafted on Wednesday morning in response to various debates about WPS and Low’s ban. Nolan’s unsigned executive order would, if signed, establish a set of rules for participants in WPS.
“If you spend your whole life angry, you’ll never get anywhere,” Low said. “Adam was on my side, which I really appreciate.”
Nolan was also criticized for citing Low’s mental health when asked about the student’s removal from WPS.
“To assign that stigma [to Low] was wildly inappropriate,” Skrzecz said. “[Low] deserves an apology, as does the rest of our community.”
