NC State ranked No. 81 among national universities and No. 33 among public universities in U.S. News & World Report’s annual “best colleges” rankings, released Tuesday.
According to U.S. News, the rankings “emphasize student outcomes – such as graduation and freshman retention rates – which carry the most weight.”
“Before taking out student loans or writing a tuition check, families should research graduation and retention rates,” said Brian Kelly, U.S. News editor and chief content officer, in a statement. “These are important indicators of how well a school supports its students both academically and financially.”
NC State was ranked No. 38 among public universities in the 2017 list which is an increase of five spots in the span of a year. In the category of national university rankings, NC State increased its position by 11 spots.
This ranking comes one month after NC State was named the best value college in North Carolina by Money Magazine, as previously reported by Technician.
In comparison to other Triangle-area schools, UNC-Chapel Hill was 30th in the national university ranking, and Duke placed ninth among national universities.
NC State also ranked 44th on the list of the best colleges for veterans, moving from 59th in 2017.
