Governor Roy Cooper sent in a formal petition to move three Confederate monuments from the State Capitol grounds to a Johnston County historical site on Friday.
The request, which was filed to the state Historical Commission, proposes that the monuments, which are the 1895 Confederate Monument, the Henry Lawson Wyatt Monument and the North Carolina Women of the Confederacy Monument, be moved to the Bentonville Battlefield, the site of a Civil War battle.
The Battle of Bentonville was fought from March 19-21 in 1865. It resulted in a Union victory, with the Army of the South suffering over 2600 casualties.
A state law passed in 2015 to protect Confederate monuments restricts the powers of the state in relocation, even with consent from the Commission.
It’s currently unclear whether the Historical Commission has the authority to approve moving the monuments. The Commission is scheduled to meet Sept. 22.
