UPDATE:
The man was taken to Rex Hospital. Campus Police are not able to identify the man or confirm whether he is a student at N.C. State. According to Lieutenant Moody, the subject is still alive.
“I can’t watch this anymore,” students said, as more students gathered around.
Around 5:30 p.m., while running down Dan Allen Drive, an 18-year-old man “collapsed and started convulsing” in front of Witherspoon Student Center, according to eyewitness accounts. Another man who was running responded first. Jon Smetana, with Campus Rec, along with the unnamed runner, began doing CPR.
Smetana was playing cornhole by himself when he saw the man out of the corner of his eye.
“He was kneeling over. It looked like he was resting,” Smetana said. ”It was like he couldn’t support himself. He face planted and rolled down the hill.”
Smetana said the unnamed runner drug the man up the hill, so his body was half on the hill and half on the brick sidewalk.
“It was literally seconds after he rolled down the hill when we reached him,” Smetana said. ”His face was already purple.”
Smetana said he, along with the unnamed runner, began doing CPR and continued until the rescue squad arrived.
Cary Area EMS, Wake County EMS and Campus Police responded to the 911 call.
According to Thomas Stafford, vice-chancellor for student affairs, University officials do not know if the man is a student.
“One of the problems we face is making sure his emergency contacts are contacted and we can’t do that. We need to identify him,” Stafford said.
Officials redirected traffic around the incident. Dan Allen Drive was closed between Thurman Drive and Cates Avenue.
The patient was taken to Rex Hospital.
Campus Police haven’t released a statement at this time.
