The No. 12 NC State women’s basketball team will take on the No. 6 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at 7 p.m. on Monday in Reynolds Coliseum for the 14th annual Play4Kay Game.
The Wolfpack (22-2, 9-2 ACC) took down No. 16 Syracuse Wednesday in Syracuse. The Pack had three players with double-doubles at the end of the game.
Graduate guard Kiara Leslie had a big game, contributing 30 points and 10 rebounds toward the 77-73 win.
Freshman center Elissa Cunane and senior forward DD Rogers also stepped up for the Wolfpack, with Cunane scoring 22 points and 12 rebounds and Rogers putting 16 on the board with 10 rebounds for the Pack.
After junior forward Erika Cassell suffered a season-ending injury against Florida State, the team was left with eight healthy players to put in against the Orange.
Notre Dame will be the third team that NC State has played this season that is ranked, and the third of the last two weeks. Notre Dame began their season ranked No. 1 until a loss to UNC-Chapel Hill three weeks ago. The Irish most recently beat Boston College 97-47 with leading scorer Arike Ogunbowale contributing 23 points.
Ironically, the Fighting Irish previously won the 2018 National Championship after suffering four ACL injuries. The biggest challenge that the Wolfpack will face will be playing against the athletes that have returned from last season, strengthening Notre Dame’s already powerful line-up.
Notre Dame averages 87.2 points per game, and, as a team, has a field-goal percentage of .515. The Wolfpack will have to pay attention to Ogunbowale, who has totaled 547 points so far this season and has a field goal percentage of .456, as well as Jessica Shepard, who has a field-goal percentage of .604.
Staying tight on defense and continuing to get rebounds will be key to a Wolfpack win, and looking to Leslie to continue to put points on the board will be crucial.
Tip-off against the Fighting Irish is at 7 p.m. on Monday night in Reynolds Coliseum.
