The No. 9 NC State wrestling team fell to a top-ranked competitor, No. 2 Ohio State, Sunday night on the road 26-10. Wins from redshirt sophomore Hayden Hidlay, redshirt sophomore Thomas Bullard and redshirt senior Sean Fausz kept the Wolfpack afloat, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Buckeyes.
At 141 and 149 pounds, redshirt senior Jamel Morris and graduate Justin Oliver started off the match with a two losses and put the Pack in a deficit against two of the Buckeye’s top wrestlers.
No. 5 Hidlay came out on top by tallying a pair of takedowns in the second and third periods to score a 7-2 win over No. 8 Ke-Shawn Hayes. This victory marked Hidlay’s second top-10 win of the season.
To follow the win from Hidlay, No. 18 Bullard ended with a 4-2 win during an extra period win over Kaleb Romero at 165 pounds. The Buckeyes took a 10-6 lead over the Wolfpack into the intermission.
Ohio State came out strong after the break to secure three more wins as Wolfpack redshirt sophomore No. 3 Nick Reenan was defeated at 184 pounds by No. 1 Myles Martin.
At 125 pounds, Fausz battled out multiple takedowns to earn an 11-2 victory against Hunter Lucas.
Another top-10 battle would end the match as redshirt sophomore No. 10 Tariq Wilson from the Wolfpack faced off with No. 5 Luke Pletcher, but had to be stopped due to an injury to Wilson during the second period. The score was tied 2-2 before the match was called.
The Wolfpack will be back in action Saturday for a special match inside PNC Arena at 3:00 p.m. against Brown. There will be live coverage from ACC Network Extra.
