The graduates recognized by the NC State University GLBT Center pose for a group photo at the 2017 Lavender Graduation in Talley Student Union Piedmont Mountains Ballroom. The Lavender Graduation began at the University of Michigan in the mid-1990s under the direction of Ronni Sanlo as their LGBT Campus Resource Center director. The Lavender Graduation is designed to create a space for GLBT students to feel supported by the university and affirmed in their identities.

Catie McEntee, a graduate student studying electrical power systems engineering and co-manager of the Soul Garden, and Megan Yang, a sophomore studying paper science and engineering and leadership council member of the Cultural Exchange Network, take out weeds in one of the garden beds at the Soul Garden located beside the Lake Raleigh dam April 16, 2016. According to McEntee, the Soul Garden, a community organic garden used to teach people how to grow organic food created in 2010, received an $800 grant last year from the sustainability fund. The grant was used to build two fences, two cinderblock beds and educational signage.

Lauren Schnabel stands with Charlie, one of her thoroughbred horses that lives on the NC State Veterinary School Campus. Schnabel is an assistant professor of equine orthopedic surgery who also conducts research in regenerative medicine, focusing on immunologic properties of stem cells, including both mesenchymal and induced pluripotent stem cells. Mesenchymal cells can become bone, cartilage, muscle and fat cells and induced pluripotent stem cells can become any body cell. The goal of Schnabel's work is to develop therapies that would allow veterinarians to treat patients with stem cells directly following diagnosis and her research has been published in multiple scientific journals.

Sombers Lab has been investigating how drug abuse and addiction relate to motivated behavior and decision-making by using animal models; the research has been conducted in part in the hopes of being applied to humans in the future.
